Crochet Christmas Tree Ornament
A layered crochet Christmas tree ornament built from a scalloped trim strip wound around a foam cone, with a crochet star topper. Draft pattern: stitch counts checked, not yet physically test-stitched.

Materials
- Worsted weight (US #4) yarn, forest or pine green — amount depends on your cone size and band count; start from a full skein
- Worsted weight yarn, small amount, yellow or gold (star topper)
- Craft-foam or polystyrene cone, about 10 cm (4 in) tall as a starting size — proposed, not a required exact size
- 4.0 mm (US G/6) crochet hook, as a starting point
- Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker
- Fabric glue, or sewing needle and thread, to secure trim bands to the cone
- Short length of cord, embroidery floss, or working yarn, for the hanging loop
- Optional: small pom-poms, beads, or contrast yarn scraps for accents
Gauge
Gauge in the usual stitches-per-inch sense isn't critical here, since the trim is wrapped around a purchased cone rather than worked to an exact finished size. Work at a comfortably firm, even tension so the shell stitches don't gap, and test-wrap your first repeat around your actual cone before working a full band.
Small detachable accents (beads, mini pom-poms) are a choking hazard. This ornament is a decorative object, not a toy, and isn't suitable for a young child to handle unsupervised. Keep it away from open flames and other heat sources.
Abbreviations (US terms)
- ch chain
- sl st slip stitch
- sc single crochet
- hdc half double crochet
- dc double crochet
- shell 5 dc worked in the same stitch
- inc increase: 2 sc in the same stitch
- MR magic ring
- st(s) stitch(es)
- rnd round
- * * repeat the instructions between asterisks as directed
- ( ) the stitch count at the end of a row/round
Scalloped Trim Band (make several, see note)
Work one band for each tier of the tree. Each band's starting chain length depends on where it sits on the cone—longer for a lower, wider band, shorter near the top. The repeat itself is fixed; only the number of repeats changes.
- FoundationCh a multiple of 6, plus 2. For a first test band, ch 32.(32)
- Row 1Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch. *Skip 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch (shell made), skip 2 ch, sc in next ch.* Rep from * across.(32)
Row 1's 32 stitches break down as 2 edge sc, 5 shells of 5 dc each, and 5 anchor sc (2 + 25 + 5 = 32). Check: a 32-chain foundation is 2 edge stitches plus 5 repeats of 6 (5 × 6 = 30, 30 + 2 = 32) — the repeat divides evenly with nothing left over. For a longer or shorter band, keep the same rule: chain 2, then any number of 6-stitch repeats.
Fasten off each band after Row 1, leaving a short tail for securing it to the cone.
Assembly
- Trim the cone's base flat if needed, so the finished ornament stands upright.
- Work your first (longest) band and secure it around the cone's base, scalloped points facing down, using fabric glue along the band's straight top edge or a whip stitch through the foam.
- Work each following band a little shorter than the last. Secure it a little higher up the cone, overlapping the top edge of the previous band by about a third of its height.
- Continue until you're close to the cone's point. The last band or two will be noticeably shorter, since the cone narrows.
- Finish the very tip with a few single crochet stitches worked directly in a small ring, rather than trying to wrap a full band around a very narrow point.
Star Topper
Worked separately in gold or yellow yarn, then attached at the tip.
- Rnd 1Magic ring, ch 1, 10 sc in ring. Join with sl st to first sc.(10)
- Rnd 2*(Sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in next st — point made —, sl st in next st.* Rep from * 4 more times (5 points total).(5 pts)
Check: round 2 uses exactly 2 stitches of round 1's 10 per point (1 for the point cluster, 1 for the joining slip stitch); 5 points × 2 sts = 10, matching round 1's count exactly with nothing left over. Fasten off, leaving a tail for attaching.
Base Disc (finishes the underside)
- Rnd 16 sc in magic ring(6)
- Rnd 2inc in every st around(12)
Glue or stitch this small disc over the cone's raw bottom edge so no foam or cut ends show. If your cone's base is noticeably wider than this disc, work a Round 3 (*1 sc, inc* × 6, giving 18 sts) before fastening off.
Hanging Loop
Chain 12 (or your preferred length), join with a sl st to the first chain to form a loop. Fasten off. Attach beside the star at the cone's tip, through the same sturdy point.
