Frequently asked questions

Your crochet questions, answered

Quick answers to the most common questions about patterns, yarn, tools and getting started with crochet.

  • What is the best yarn for beginners?

A smooth, light-coloured worsted (medium, US #4) weight yarn in cotton, acrylic or a cotton-acrylic blend. Smooth, light colours make it easiest to see your stitches while you are still learning to read your work. See our fibre guide and yarn weights explained for more.

  • How do I choose the right crochet hook?

Check the yarn label: most list a suggested hook size. A 5.0 mm hook with worsted-weight yarn is a common, comfortable starting point, and is what our own first lesson uses. From there, our hook guide covers materials and grip styles.

  • Are your patterns suitable for beginners?

Yes — every pattern lists a skill level, and we have a dedicated beginner-friendly selection across amigurumi, baby items, bags and home décor. Patterns marked Draft have not been test-stitched yet; we say so plainly on the pattern itself.

  • Do you offer free crochet patterns?

Every pattern on CrochetSmith is free to read on the site. Some also include an optional printable PDF, noted on the pattern page itself.

  • How long does a typical project take?

It depends entirely on the project and your pace: a small amigurumi can take a couple of hours, while a blanket can take several evenings. Each pattern lists an estimated time and a skill level up front, so you can judge before you start.
