The magic ring, step by step

The magic ring (also called an adjustable ring) begins a circle of stitches, then pulls tight so there is no hole in the centre. It takes a few tries to feel natural.

Make the ring

1. Wrap the yarn twice around two fingers of your non-dominant hand, so the working yarn crosses over the tail.
2. Slide the loops off your fingers, pinching where the yarn crosses.
3. Insert the hook through the ring, catch the working yarn, and pull it through. One loop is on the hook.
4. Chain 1 to lock the loop. This chain does not count as a stitch.

Work into the ring

1. Work your stitches (usually 6 sc) under both strands of the ring, over the tail.
2. Pull the tail to see which of the two strands moves the ring. Pull the moving strand to close the ring.
3. Pull the tail firmly so the ring closes completely.
4. Join with a slip stitch, or continue in a spiral, depending on your pattern.

Troubleshooting

• The ring won’t close. You pulled the wrong strand. Try the other one.
• The ring opens later. Weave the tail through a few stitches and knot it at the end. Leave a 10 cm tail so you can secure it.
• It’s too fiddly. Use the alternative: chain 2 and work 6 sc into the first chain. The centre is not as tight, but it is easier.
