The essential notions kit
The small tools that make crochet easier, from locking stitch markers to a blunt yarn needle.
Beyond a hook and yarn, you need only a few small tools. Here are the ones that earn their place in the bag.
- Locking stitch markers. Clip one onto the first stitch of every round in amigurumi, or at the end of a row you need to find again.
- A blunt yarn (tapestry) needle. For weaving in ends and sewing pieces together. Choose one with a large eye and a bent tip if possible.
- Small, sharp scissors. Cut yarn cleanly instead of breaking it.
- A flexible tape measure. For checking gauge and measuring items.
- A row counter. A simple clicker or a tally on paper. It saves you from miscounting.
- Straight pins. For blocking and holding seams.
For amigurumi
Add polyester fibre fill and safety eyes. Safety eyes lock into the fabric with a washer, but they are not suitable for toys for children under three. Embroider the eyes instead for baby toys.
A note on storage
A small zipped pouch keeps everything in one place. Store scissors with their tips covered.
