Choosing your first crochet project
A scarf is the standard first project, but it is not always the best one. What to make instead, and why.

Most beginners are told to make a scarf. It’s an understandable suggestion: it is a rectangle, and it uses one simple stitch. But a scarf is also long, repetitive, and a long time before you see a finished piece.
What makes a good first project
- Finishes fast. A win in an afternoon builds confidence.
- Uses one or two stitches. Enough to practise, not enough to confuse.
- Is forgiving. A little uneven tension should not ruin it.
- Is something you will use. Motivation matters.
Better first projects
Coasters. A circle teaches increases, and you finish four in a couple of hours. Try the Stacked Coaster Set.
A baby hat. Small, quick and worked in the round. See the Cloud Beanie.
A small amigurumi. It teaches the magic ring and shaping, and it is fun. Moss the Mushroom is a gentle place to start.
If you do want a scarf
Work it in a chunky yarn, in half double crochet, and stop when you are bored, not when it is finished. Short scarves are in fashion.
