Half double crochet (hdc)
A middle-height stitch with a soft drape, ideal for hats and blankets. The “yarn over first” stitch.

How to work it
- Yarn over.
- Insert the hook into the next stitch.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have 3 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Tips
- A ch 2 turning chain is often used at the start of a row. It does not always count as a stitch, so follow your pattern.
- Keep an eye on your three loops. If you only have two, you missed the first yarn over.
- Working in the back loop only makes horizontal ridges and a stretchier fabric.
